6. The big “G” [Google] loves blogs with great contents and there for sends a lot of people to read and buy products from credible sites like the one you are going to build in 20 minutes.
I believe by now you must have known some certain reasons why you need a blog for your business, so without wasting, much of your time lets start since it is going to be a 20 minutes guide to setting up your own blog.
Choosing a platform.
To create a blog, there are certain decisions you need to make.
one of them is choosing a blogging platform.
The platform you choose will decide your chance of getting the results you want.
Here are 5 most popular platforms to build a blog with.
All these platforms are good to build blogs but the one I will recommend for you to start with is WordPress platform.
WordPress requires no “coding skill” to set up a site.
It is a drag and drop system, you don’t need to learn all the coding skills in the world.
It has free amazing and good-looking themes every beginner can use and most of its features are endless. meaning 90% of everything you see on other websites can be implemented with use off plugins and add-ons.
Don’t know the meaning of plugins and add-ons? I will explain all these to you later in the article.
For you to start using WordPress platform to build a blog, you need to get a domain and hosting.
In this article, I will show you how to get a domain and hosting from Namecheap
Free Blogging platform Vs self-hosted
I will begin with the free blogging platforms.
When you run a blog using a free version it is likely to get deleted at any time.
You will not get the desired result in a long-term run most especially if you want to run your business online.
Here are con’s of using a free platform
1. You don’t own your content.
One of the free and most popular blog platforms is Blogspot which hosted by Google.
This free blog has limited reliability for all their new and old users.
One’s blog can easily get deleted or limited from performing some certain legal actions.
2. You don’t control your content.
Yes, this is one of the parts you don’t want to hear at all.
You know how hard it is to find unique content ideas for a blog post these days but to cut it short.
Google still own your blog and can anytime delete or stop your contents from performing well on search engines.
3. Not suitable for credibility.
One of the most important parts is that you want people to appreciate what you are doing and then give you credit by commenting and sharing of your articles.
But free platform limits you from getting such credibility and you will be marked as an unserious blogger or business owner.
You can’t present the free platform to organizations looking forward to working with you.
Simply because they will not take you as a serious business owner, organization or blogger.
4. No Money Making Idea Will work Fine.
Getting paid online is one of the most important parts of blogging, but free blogging platforms have limitations to that area.
When it comes to making money with free blogging platforms your chances are 2% out of a 100% the remaining 98% will be gone for good.
Because of the poor offer free blogging platform has to give you.
5. Domain Complexity
Your domain name will be hard to remember by anyone who visits your site.
e.g. yourdomain.wix.com, yourdomain.blogspot.com
Come to think of it.
Can you name any three or two successful bloggers that are using domains like the long examples I gave earlier?
Common not even one exists.
And you want to use free a platform for business, personal branding?
All limitations apply to WordPress.com
Your chance of monetizing your content is very low.
So whatever you need to run a blog without limitation it is a WordPress self-hosted platform (WordPress.org).
It is same software as WordPress.com and it has no limit.
Choice cannot be made by me.
Yes, it’s totally your choice to go with the free platform in as much as possible that you will or will not be successful with the free platform. Go with the free platform.
You can need it to run on a low budget and for experimental and research purposes only.
But if you really want to;
- Be successful.
- Control your content.
- Be your own boss.
- Win credibility.
- Make your business visible.
- Make money out of blogging, and
- Become phenomenal.
Then I’ll recommend that you go for the “WordPres self-hosted” platform.
It won’t cost you the world to make your business travel, become credible, and yes build your community.
Setting up a self-hosted blog is way easier and it cost less than you think of it.
After choosing a platform, what next “Step 2”
Choosing your domain name and hosting
How to decide a name for your blog.
Many unique names are there In your thoughts.
All you have to do is decide which one to go for and the one that will work with your brand or business.
Well, I will help you with that in minutes and teach you how to get your domain name registered with the right host.
To decide on which name to use is simple but it is also sensitive and you can get banned if you choose the wrong name for your blog.
Here is the tip
Avoid using trademarks from top companies and business.
e.g., BitrusGoogle.com is a trademark of Google, wordpressbitrus.com is a trademark of WordPress which is WordPress and avoid many more trademarks like the ones.
Make it short and memorable.
This has to do with a domain name that is not easily forgotten but remembered.
Choose a name that creates a picture in the mind of your visitors in case if they will return to your site.
For example something like
Zethag.com is memorable
When choosing a domain name, avoid using names like
Those are long and hard to remember names for everyone, when I come across those names I get pissed off.
You’re psychologically bringing back potential visitors. Because of the name you choose to use for your brand.
Let’s take for example if I want to search anything on the web.
The first thing that comes to my mind is Google, because I have been there and I used it the last time, they gave me what I went searching for.
That’s how your domain name should serve as your blog and brand.
Now there is this question we need to answer before we move on to next paragraph.
Should you use your name as your domain name?
Yes, of course, it is the practices made and it increases your credibility and trust between you and your visitors, if they actually remember your name then would easily remember the address of your site,
But sometimes, you can’t use your name.
Here are the reasons why.
-Your name is too hard and long to guess.
-You have a very case-sensitive name that can’t be spelled by users easily.
-So here is a tip
Yusufbitrus.com is short concise, ok let’s try using my profession + my name
And this will give us this two results
These are easy to guess because it connects with my bio.
But in rare cases, your name might have been used by another person.
what you should do.
By adding your “title+company name”, your “name+ company name”, or by adding “my“, “me” “e“, “pro” at the beginning of the name or the ending will help you decide which is suitable to use.
Having understood what it means to get the right domain, the next step now is to register your domain name.
Now let’s get your name registered with the right company.
First, am going to recommend that you use Namecheap as your domain name provider.
These are the reason I recommend them to you.
1. They have the domain you are looking for.
2. Their customer service is 24/7 with all help you need if you have any issues with setting up your domain.
3. They have been the best customer experience for years.
4. Flexible and convenient payment gateway during checkout.
So here is how to buy a domain name from Namecheap.
Step 2 after you must have completely registered your account with Namecheap.
Use the search bar on the homepage of Namecheap by typing the name you chose to use for your blog and hit the enter button.
See reputation for more illustration.
Step 3. allow the site to load for a few seconds and click the cart button right beside the domain name you searched earlier.
other domain extensions you can choose
choose any extension that works well for you but note that pricing differs.
Step 4 Proceed to the next step by clicking view cart button on the right-hand side of the site.
Step 5 on the new page you will see some other add-ons that are where automatically checked, now uncheck all but leave the whois privacy checked it is free for the first year and protects your domain name.
See photo for better understanding.
Step 6 click the confirm order button on the right-hand side of the site to go ahead with payment for your domain.
Step 7 Here you will be required to pay for your domain which is a total amount of $11
You can pay with your prepaid. Master card, PayPal account, and Bitcoin wallet.
Choose the payment gateway that is convenient and easy for you.
You can also top-up your Namecheap account with cash so you can renew your domain if it expires if you are running on a budget.
And lastly, confirm your other by clicking the “Confirm order” button on the site.
Now, you have your domain registered you will need a house for it on the internet which is your hosting account this will serve as a bank for your contents, images, videos, online products, and services you give legally on your site. Without it, your domain name is useless and can’t be accessed by anyone on the web including you.
So we go right off on how to buy a Web Hosting Package for hosting your site and get it live in 5 minutes.
we need a reliable and at the same time cheap hosting company that is up to your budget to buy our hosting
So I will recommend that you go with
they have one the best server and uptime when compared to all other companies
But sometimes, you might already have a hosting provider in mind, no problem with that.
You can always go for them as far as they offer fast, reliable, have unlimited bandwidth and don’t cause the problem to your site.
I will also recommend you go for web4africa.net, domainking.ng, or guarantor.ng
They all are good
But for best customer satisfaction I always recommend Namecheap for hosting and domain purchase.
Here is the step-by-step guide on how to buy hosting from Namecheap.
So let’s start without wasting Much of your time
First, visit Namecheap and then create an account with them or log in to an existing account.
After you must have signed up with them click the button below to buy the hosting.
or navigate to hosting then from the drop-down menu select shared hosting, either way, you can still use the direct link below.
Step 1 Choose a package from the lined options as seen on the screen below.
But as a beginner, I would recommend the “value plan” that can meet up with your budget which is almost $10 for the first year and almost $40 to renew it in the following year.
Click on “Add to Cart” after you might have decided on the plan you want to go for.
Step 2 on the next page select a “domain name” or choose an existing one.
Just choose what matches your condition.
Choose “will update the nameservers on my existing domain” if you got domain somewhere else
since the domain, we purchased earlier was from Namecheap, we will choose “Use a domain name I own with name cheap”
Step 3 on the next page if you have more than one domain name just select the one you want or select the new domain which was registered earlier in our tutorial.
and click on “continue”
Step 4 choose the payment method that is convenient for you and make payment. after that click on “confirm order“.
next, wait for a welcome email from Namecheap to confirm the hosting purchase.
you will be emailed with your purchase receipt, in another mail from them contained with a guide on how to set up your hosting to work with your domain
Make sure you keep them handy and safe because you will need it to install and build your WordPress blog.
Now you need to, first, connect your hosting with your domain to work as one, in other words, glue them together.
what we are going to do in the section is to connect your hosting together with your domain by updating the name servers.
- login to your Namecheap accounts and navigate to Domain list.
- click on “manage” next to the domain which you want to connect to your hosting.
- Now select Namecheap web hosting DNS right beside Nameservers and then click the save button.
Before we move on to the next stage, here is what you need to understand as a beginner.
- We need to wait for about 5 to 10 minutes for them to activate the account and domain.
- we also need to update the DNS record to make sure your domain is pointed to you hosting for them to work upon account activation.
This link will help you do that in no time.
After you must have updated the DNS records, it might take up to 2 to 24hrs in rare cases more than that for the website to be accessible, and this is an automatic process which cannot be bypassed you just have to exercise patience while it properly connects.
This Process is known as domain propagation.
